When people think of food trucks, hotdogs, fried chicken and potato chips generally come to mind – but now there’s a new breed of food trucks in town.
Although the food truck trend may not be new for everyone, as it spreads to different states, food trucks continue to gain popularity.
In a recent study done by Technomic, “91 percent of consumers polled who are familiar with food trucks say they view the trend as having staying power and not a passing fad.”
Fans go to Facebook and Twitter to find out when and where the next food truck meet-up is. Pages such as Miami Food Trucks, with over 20,000 fans, keep people in the loop when it comes to food truck meet-ups.
“I love the concept of gourmet food trucks, meet ups are always changing, so it’s not boring,” said chef Jose Sanchez. “I was really shocked with how fresh the food was,” he added.
Not only do people use social networking sites to find more information about food truck meet-ups, they also use it to share with their friends how it went.
“Just had a religious experience at the food trucks expo in Tamiami Park … fried Twix,” graphic designer Marcela Gurdián posted on her Facebook status. Gurdián’s favorite is “Moty’s Grill,” a Mediterranean-Israeli food truck in Miami.
While there are complaints about the lack of seating at food truck meet-ups and the high meal prices, the diversity in food options and overall experience some say make up for it. College student Anthony Sosa goes often to food truck meet-ups with friends.
“I had an awesome experience and the quality of the food was great,” Sosa said of the last meet-up he went to.
The food truck trend generated the reality show “The Great Food Truck Race.” The first season was a “huge success,” according to Bob Tushman, Food Network general manager and senior vice president of programming. Now the show is gearing up for its second season premiering Aug. 14.
Tyler Florence, host of “The Great Food Truck Race,” said in an interview, “So what it’s turning into is the new American answer to fast food, which I think is fantastic.”
